We are Church St Helens: one parish with eleven churches and a team of ten stipendiary clergy, learning together what it means to work as a team to the glory of God in St Helens. We are aiming to work more closely with one another: bringing together our laity and clergy to be more effective in mission, discipleship, leadership and justice. This continues to be a work in progress and we are looking for a dynamic leader who can continue this journey of change with us.
You will lead two of our churches on the east side of the town of St Helens: St Paul’s Blackbrook and St Philip’s Parr. They are warm and welcoming communities, with great local teams of lay people. You will have a heart for introducing people to Jesus, deepening discipleship, developing Christian leaders and working for justice.
As part of the wider team you will find a contribution to the whole by developing a portfolio ministry according to your skills. We would love to develop our evangelism and our communications, but we would also love to see the passion and skills you will bring.
We are looking forward to serving with you.

St Mary’s Grassendale is a medium/large active church in the south of Liverpool. The church is prominently situated on a main road, with its adjacent parish hall which is well used by a range of church groups and private rentals.
The current parish has a population of 9,076 and a deprivation rating of 23.08. The Parish encompasses a range of socio-economic backgrounds and housing types, with many social housing initiatives within the Parish, and large privately owned Victorian houses in the roads immediately behind the church.
There are excellent transport links locally, with Cressington metro station a 1-minute walk away, a bus stop outside the Church Hall, and a 15 minute ride into the city centre, or to Liverpool John Lennon Airport. The parish includes a local high street, supermarket, Library, Garston park and leisure centre, Otterspool Promenade along the River Mersey, hairdressers, Beauty Therapists, Nursing and Residential Homes, Bars, Restaurants and Cafes and the newly refurbished Adventure Playground – the ‘Venny’.
After much thought, St Mary’s have committed to joining with several other parishes in Liverpool South Deanery, as a new Single Larger Parish called Christ our Light. This follows the Diocese of Liverpool ‘Fit for Mission’ strategy. You will be working closely within a team within the Single Larger Parish with much of the administration being looked after by the central support services team, in order to free clergy and laity to focus on missional activity which builds the church and the Kingdom in this place. Over this transitional period, this post is offered on a 0.5 2 year interim post. The aspiration in the Deanery is for a post in this or similar form to continue longer term should funds allow, and you would be part of shaping that future with the wider team and Deanery.
Closing Date: Sunday 15th February

We’re recruiting a new kind of Team Rector for a new kind of parish. A place where a large and committed team of clergy and laity work together, released to do the ministry and mission they are called to by the provision of high quality central support services. A place where evangelism and social justice go hand in hand. A place where team is real – where everyone knows themselves to be mutually supported and mutually accountable, across church tradition and local boundaries. This needs a loving, prayerful, inspiring and wise leader. Could God be calling you here?
In 2022, West Derby Deanery was one of the first deaneries in the Diocese of Liverpool to commit to the Fit for Mission programme, a locally led transformation project aimed at making better provision for sustainable mission and ministry. In the deanery there are 10 churches, from a variety of church traditions and serving a variety of different communities, which have come together to become a new single parish, resourced by a team ministry with 7 team vicars, plus curates, readers and Support Services staff. The Parish Operations and Enterprise Manager and Support Services Team offer support from the centre, resourcing churches, freeing up time and energy for local mission and ministry. After a period of 2 years working ‘as if’, pastoral reorganisation was completed in March 2025.
The Parish of Christ our Hope includes large swathes of varied housing, in communities on either side of an approximately 3-mile stretch of Queens Drive (A5058) Liverpool, from Norris Green to Childwall. The 2018 census recorded a total population of 90,492 living in 37,306 households across an area of 7.82miles. According to the Index for Multiple Deprivation, of the 10 original parishes, 3 are in the most deprived 1%, 5 in the most deprived 5% and just two are outside of the deprivation figures. Whilst there is growing diversity in terms of ethnicity, statistics reveal a largely white population, with statistics ranging from 92.5 to 97.1%, and Christianity is the recorded faith of between 75 and 83.2% of the population. Included in the parish are Victorian terraces, many post-war outer estates, and some areas of suburban development, including an estate built in the 1980s.
Becoming fitter and stronger to do God’s work is not about becoming a homogenised group, but is about embracing our locality and rich diversity, supporting each other as we work towards our missional priorities, tackle key challenges, and grow closer together as brothers and sisters in Christ. The Team Rector is the leader of this clergy team, chair of the PCC, and has oversight of mission and ministry across the whole parish.
The Team Rector is not currently associated with any particular church or worshipping community. In these early years of COHL, we have been able to release the Rector to have capacity to manage the change and help to reset our culture and missional priorities. Going forward, the aim is for the Rector to focus on our missional vision across the whole parish. At times, the Rector may need to offer additional support when there is a team vicar vacancy, or going forward, may also want to shape the Rector role to include local leadership in one of our churches or worshipping communities.
These are early days for this role, and it is being developed in changeable times in the Church of England. The role of the Rector is to lead in these times, shaping the parish and the resources available to it, to best serve the mission of God across Christ our Hope Liverpool. We value diversity in unity and encourage each worship community to act locally as we support centrally. The Team Rector plays a key role in supporting centrally, to resource and strengthen each church and worshipping community to act locally.
This Role Description should be read in conjunction with the Parish Profile.
Key Priorities and responsibilities include:
• Leading the whole parish in an intentional missional focus on (a) Mission and discipleship planning (b) Growing and maturing the giving base (c) Stewarding our buildings and other assets for new income
• Further embedding a culture of clergy accountability and systems to make accountability and support real.
• Supporting, mentoring and managing team members leading in different areas of mission, discipleship and evangelism, and social justice (“portfolio working”) to build and share expertise.
• Development of lay ministry, including programmes to develop and support lay people in missional leadership
• Enabling and supporting the establishment of the Youth and Children’s Hub (funded for 3-4 years, beginning 2026).
• Knowing the people of the parish through worship, meetings, and developing a cohesive approach across multiple churches.
• Ensuring we get the right buildings (including churches and halls etc) – which we will need to develop, maintain, close etc and a viable plan to do so sustainably.
• Developing financial sustainability and accountability, prioritising enterprise to resource mission, supporting local decision-making and budgeting.
• Further developing the Support Services Hub to equip COHL and to offer support to all parishes within West Derby Deanery.

This is a full time post on common tenure terms and conditions. Housing will be provided for the better performance of the postholders duties.
The house designated for this post is Holy Spirit Vicarage, Dovecot Road, L14 7QJ. This is a modern detached property set back from the road with lawns and driveway, with a private enclosed garden.
There are 3 downstairs reception rooms, kitchen, utility room, WC, and upstairs 4 bedrooms and a family bathroom. It is situated opposite a convenient parade of shops.

Clergy Vacancies
St Peter’s Church is praying for a new vicar who will join us in bringing the gospel of God’s love and redemption to the people of Parr, situated in the deanery of St Helens in the diocese of Liverpool. St Helens lies mid-way between Liverpool and Manchester and is surrounded by two major roads – the A58 and the A580, along with the motorways M6, M62 and M57, giving good links to two international airports, several universities and teaching hospitals.
We are an evangelical church with an outreach ministry to people of all ages and stages in our low-income community. Our regular activities include a toddler group, coffee mornings, free hot refreshments, and we have good links with local schools and care homes.
Our beautifully re-ordered church building is a focal point for local heritage interest, as well as a flexible space. Our worship is structured without being overly informal – we do, however, robe for communion and pastoral services.
We are looking for a vicar who will:
- Work alongside us, to develop and direct the gifts of the whole congregation, and deepen our Christian discipleship;
- Be a catalyst for our mission to the community, interested in people of all-ages, and able to nurture growth in our church.
- Offer pastoral ministry within the church family
We can offer you:
- A small team of dedicated church members who all play our part in the mission and ministry of our church;
- An ethos motivated by the compassion and love of Jesus where all are welcome, and where we go the extra mile to serve the needs of our community.
This post is offered under Common Tenure EITHER as a House-for-Duty post with a four-bedroom vicarage provided, OR as a part-time 0.4 stipendiary post without housing provided at a stipend of £15,836, depending on the needs of the person appointed.
For an informal conversation, contact Archdeacon Simon Fisher: simon.fisher@liverpool.anglican.org

We are an evangelical church with a faithful congregation with a usual Sunday attendance of 30 people with a wonderful opportunity for a priest to be creative and introduce new acts of worship and many missional opportunities. The church building itself has great potential as a community resource which villagers would welcome.
We are looking for a passionate, pastoral, approachable, friendly and caring priest who has experience of successful leadership and a desire to see the church grow. You will be able to identify, build and strengthen the congregation, communicate well and provide Bible based teaching to enable people to put faith into action.
We are offering you a friendly, enthusiastic church family with 3 retired clergy and extensive lay ministry.
The Vicarage is on a housing development very close to the church, detached with 5 bedrooms and garden.
Newburgh is close to Parbold with a railway station and easy access to Southport and Wigan. It is in a rural setting and has a population of about 1000 with many facilities including a post office with small shop and café, The Red Lion pub, Eden café and a farm shop Wilton House. Applecast charity supports young people with learning difficulties and Newburgh CE school is rated as Outstanding by OFSTED.
Please see the Person Specification, Role Description, Bishops’ statement and Parish Profile attached for further details of the role and the essential and desirable qualities we are seeking in relation to this post.
(If you would prefer it to be part-time without housing provided, we could be flexible)

Roles at the Diocese of Liverpool
Are you someone who:
- Is excited about enabling clergy and lay people to think about mission in new ways?
- Wants to see lay people released into planting and growing new worship communities?
- Is able to deliver training, workshops and mentoring in a relevant and engaging fashion?
We are looking for a gifted and passionate team member to work with local clergy and a local Cultivate team to grow mission locally and fulfil the diocesan vision of more people knowing Jesus, and more justice in the world. Both experience and the evidence suggests that a key strategy for church growth is the planting of new worship communities, and so we have developed a programme called Cultivate that catalyses the growth of new worship communities and releases, trains and supports lay people in this pursuit. Fundamentally, the essence of this role is to ensure that more people know Jesus and that churches in Liverpool Diocese are growing with disciples.
Cultivate Enablers will primarily be assigned to two particular deaneries and will deliver all aspects of Cultivate in each. Cultivate works with both Larger Single Parishes (LSPs) and Single Parishes (SPs), enabling them to become more missionally effective, and it attempts this in two ways. The first is supporting churches to “refresh” what already exists, enabling them to build missional capacity. The second is enabling a “fresh” wave of new worship communities and justice initiatives to spring up through envisioning, training and supporting lay leaders. Vitally, all clergy (and churches) engage with both pathways concurrently and all aspects of Cultivate are led by local lay and clergy teams. Through both the FFM and DIP projects, we have a remarkable opportunity to work with every church in the diocese, encouraging and growing missional capacity and encouraging the planting of new worship communities, and therefore we are particularly looking for people who are able to work across a broad range of traditions in the church.
Duties and Responsibilities
Cultivate will work, as we have said, to enable churches to grow in their missional capacity and to catalyse the planting of new worship communities, using the Cultivate pathways but adapting to the locality, in conjunction with local clergy and a local team. Therefore the core tasks will be:
1.Establish key local relationships:
- Develop good relationships with local clergy in both LSPs and SPs
- Establish a local Cultivate team of both clergy and lay that will focus on the establishment of new worship communities and the development of lay planters in the area
- Together with the local Cultivate team, develop a work plan that focuses on the development of new worship communities and lay planters in their area
2.Ensure the establishment of new worship communities and development of lay planters:
- Ensure the 6-week Cultivate course, in-person and online, is delivered to groups of emerging lay leaders and clergy
- Deliver workshops to clergy (including Mission Plan workshops)
- Help to grow and develop emerging lay leaders, alongside clergy
- Enable an ongoing system of lay leader mentoring by clergy to be set up
- Ensure additional training to emerging lay leaders is set up
- Help to organise the annual retreat for emerging lay leaders across the diocese
- Work with the New Worship Communities (NWC) Enabler to establish and grow Learning Communities, which will support learning and development for emerging lay leaders but will also be a catalyst for NWC planting in deaneries across the diocese.
3.Grow missional capacity in existing churches:
- Deliver the Church 360 tool to churches and existing worship communities, delivering workshops and 1-to-1 conversations, facilitating all aspects of the process and enabling the establishment and review of action plans.
4. Liaise with the deanery and diocese:
- Be the Cultivate contact for the deanery, develop good relationships with key personnel (including, in FFM, the local Cultivate Lead, the Change Facilitator, the Change Lead, and the Team Coach), engage effectively with all clergy, foster good relationships with emerging lay leaders.
- Integrate work with the Vocations Team to ensure robust recruitment practices for Lay Leaders and support for vocational pathways for individuals including relevant learning and development opportunities.
- Ensure excellent communication with key stakeholders and adhere to agreed procedures for the full delivery of Cultivate.
- Measure and track delivery data
- Actively prepare the deanery for succession planning, enabling Cultivate to be delivered beyond the intervention period
5. Develop Cultivate:
- Together with the rest of the Cultivate Project Team, seek to develop Cultivate (including the key tools, processes and procedures that underpin both Pathways) through consistent participant feedback, effective review, and development meetings.

Are you someone who:
- Is excited about enabling clergy and lay people to think about mission in new ways?
- Wants to see lay people released into planting and growing new worship communities?
- Is able to develop strategies to enable the growth and development of new worship communities?
We are looking for a gifted and passionate team member to work with the rest of the Cultivate team to grow mission locally and fulfil the diocesan vision of more people knowing Jesus, and more justice in the world. Both experience and the evidence suggests that a key strategy for church growth is the planting of new worship communities, and so we have developed a programme called Cultivate that catalyses the growth of new worship communities and releases, trains and supports lay people in this pursuit. This role will work alongside the deanery-based Cultivate teams to encourage replication and generally deliver strategies that enable the growth of new worship communities (NWCs) across the diocese. Fundamentally, the essence of this role is to ensure that more people know Jesus and that churches in Liverpool Diocese are growing with disciples.
Cultivate began as a grass-roots initiative in Liverpool Diocese, seeking to grow missional capacity in the church and stimulate the planting of new worship communities. It works with both Larger Single Parishes (LSPs) and Single Parishes (SPs), enabling them to become more missionally effective, and it attempts this in two ways. The first is supporting churches to “refresh” what already exists, enabling them to build missional capacity. The second is enabling a “fresh” wave of new worship communities (NWCs) and justice initiatives to spring up through envisioning, training and supporting lay leaders. Vitally, all clergy (and churches) engage with both pathways concurrently and all aspects of Cultivate are done in partnership with local clergy. Through both the FFM and DIP projects, we have a remarkable opportunity to work with every church in the diocese, encouraging and growing missional capacity and encouraging the planting of new worship communities, and therefore we are particularly looking for someone who is able to work across a broad range of traditions in the church.
Duties and Responsibilities
This role will work alongside deanery-based Cultivate team members but will focus exclusively on the planting of NWCs. Therefore the core tasks will be:
1.Establish Learning Communities across the diocese:
- The development of Learning Communities (or “communities of practice”) is a key strategic focus for the Cultivate team, which will support learning and development for emerging lay leaders but will also be a catalyst for NWC planting in deaneries across the diocese.
- Therefore we will look to establish a Learning Community for types of NWC planted in the diocese.
2.Develop other strategies to encourage the planting of NWCs:
- Alongside Learning Communities, this role will develop other strategies (alongside the Cultivate team and other stakeholders) to encourage the planting of NWCs in deaneries across the diocese.
3.Oversee current areas of lay leadership development:
- To oversee the process for NWC grants for emerging worship communities within FFM and DIP.
- To lead on the delivery of the annual Inspire conference.
- To assist in the delivery of the Cultivate course across the diocese in conjunction with the rest of the Cultivate team.
- To assist in the development of local mentoring for lay leaders of NWCs.
4.Ensure effective liaison and development:
- Work with each Cultivate team member on their deanery Cultivate Work Plan, to ensure a targeted and creative plan for NWC planting for each deanery.
- Develop good relationships with key personnel, engage effectively with all clergy, foster good relationships with key teams (for instance, in relation to worship communities in schools).
- Integrate work with the Vocations Team to ensure robust recruitment practices for Lay Leaders and support for vocational pathways for individuals including relevant learning and development opportunities.
- Meet regularly with the Learning and Development Lead for the overall coordination of Diocesan learning communities.
- Represent the diocese at occasional regional and national church planting conferences and network meetings.
- Ensure excellent communication with key stakeholders and adhere to agreed procedures for the full delivery of Cultivate.
- Measure and track delivery data.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
Liverpool Diocese is committed to treating our whole community with dignity and respect. We desire to represent diverse identities within our community whether this be by race, culture, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability or social background of each person to ensure they fulfil their potential within a proactive, loving and caring environment.
About the Diocese of Liverpool
The Diocese of Liverpool is the Church of England in a corner of the North West with churches from Southport to Widnes; Wigan to Warrington and throughout the city of Liverpool all working their hardest to fulfil our vision of asking God for a bigger church making a bigger difference with more people knowing Jesus and more justice in the world.
As we work towards that vision we have four priorities:
- Introducing people to Jesus
- Deepening discipleship
- Developing Christian leaders
- Working for justice
About Fit for Mission
The Diocese of Liverpool is on a transformation journey called Fit for Mission, a six-year strategic programme to support our vision of asking God for a bigger church to make a bigger difference. The goal of Fit for Mission is to enable all parishes, church plants, fresh expressions, schools and chaplaincies to fulfil God’s mission and to make new disciples where they are.
The Fit for Mission programme will provide focus and support to work together to face the significant issues that hold back mission and growth.
Fit for Mission will support each deanery in the Diocese of Liverpool to create their own future. There are six elements to this, and for each of them the programme will make available help and specialist resource.
- A focus on developing our discipleship culture through training and support, including delivering ‘Cultivate’, a successful Local Missional Leadership programme. Resulting in hundreds of newly planted worship communities and justice initiatives.
- Creating core support-services in deaneries to support and resource your mission
- Creating missional leadership teams of lay and ordained people over larger areas with responsibility for specific mission and worship communities.
- Developing agreed mutual support and accountability structures for all leaders.
- Work towards each deanery having one Larger Parish. Fewer parishes, but more worshipping communities and more justice initiatives. Less bureaucracy, more mission. With a local strategic approach, more diversity of worship will be possible.
- Making sure buildings are fit for purpose, with buildings expertise available to assist in making good decisions on use, investment, or closure.
Earth Justice is an identified priority, being high on the priorities of young people, as well as a mandate set out by national synod. The Diocese of Liverpool has a strategy that sets out how we propose to meet our carbon net zero targets by 2030. This reinforces our objective to be a sustainable flourishing church equipped for the future.

About the Hubs
The Liverpool Diocese has a bold vision to reach, disciple, and resource children, young people, and families to be life-long followers of Jesus. In 2025, the diocese received a significant investment to grow its work with 0 – 18s. Our Youth and Children’s Hubs partner with local church clusters (deaneries) to develop new, creative, and sustainable ministry.
Each Hub will look slightly different depending on the context but will be made up of at least one experienced Youth and Children’s Lead, two Scholarship Students as well as gifted and called lay people. The Hub teams will support existing work with children and families, start new and creative projects to connect with young people, host small discipleship groups for teenagers and work with others to build a growing ministry to 0-18s.
The team will support existing ministries, launch new outreach initiatives, lead small discipleship groups, and help grow a strong and welcoming church community for children and young people.
What you’ll do
As a Scholarship Student, you’ll gain hands-on experience in ministry while developing leadership and practical skills. Activities include:
· Leading groups and worship communities
· Mentoring and connecting with young people
· Collaborating with your Hub team and other church leaders
· Being part of a formation group at Emmanuel with dedicated support
If you have a particular passion — like sports ministry, music outreach, or creative arts — we’ll do our best to shape your role to reflect your gifts and interests.
You won’t be on your own. You’ll be supported by your Hub Lead, a wider diocesan network, and your Emmanuel tutor.
Study and Weekly Rhythm
The scholarship has two components: academic study and practical placement.
Academic Study:
· Delivered by Emmanuel Theological College (Durham University accredited)
· One full teaching day per week (Mondays, term time)

Funding
· Tuition fees for the 3-year BA are fully covered by the Liverpool Diocese
· £500 monthly grant for living expenses

Our Chaplain is an established role in the school since the school became a Church of England school in 2012.
The Chaplain has a unique role in our school in being part of school life but also deliberately not seen as a ‘teacher’. The school Chaplain is an important adult role model for both students and staff. They play the lead role in preparing and leading worship for students and staff, running clubs for students and leading spiritual reflection in school.
Our Christian mission sits at the heart of our curriculum. We are looking for our next Chaplain to work with us to further develop our Christian ethos, support our young people and help us deliver our social action agenda.
Our school is deeply rooted in its Christian values, which palpably define the culture of the school. We test all we do through the lens of what is right for each child. You will hear us use the phrase ‘ruthlessly compassionate’ which means each and every day we have the resolve, commitment and highest of expectations to do the right thing for every child, because every child has the right to, and deserves, an exceptional education.
We do not select by any faith designation as part of our admissions criteria. We are very clear that we are a mission-led school serving Jesus Christ through our school community.
You will be employed by the school and the bulk of your work would be in our school, but the reach of your role extends beyond the school gates to build close relationships in local schools and churches, and national organisations reflecting our social action agenda.
We are committed to Chaplaincy playing a key and central part of our school life. We have experienced that with previous Chaplains and remain committed to that going forward by offering this as a permanent role.
You will need to be a committed Christian who will act as a role model for both adults and students.
You will work with our Head of Christian Distinctiveness to plan, write and deliver our collective worship programme in creative and varied ways and to organise key events of reflection for the whole school community such as Harvest, Advent, Easter and Christmas.
In practical terms, you will play a lead role in writing and providing resources where you or others lead collective worship in small groups, form groups, year group and school assemblies.
You will be both a leader and facilitator in explaining, nurturing, introducing and developing spirituality and the Christian faith in our school, and as part of that playing a key role in profiling the importance of social action – a key part of our wider curriculum.
You will live out the Gospel in word and actions as a Christian role model to students and staff.
We are committed to delivering the highest standards and our staff are proud to belong to the school. We believe that Lowton Church of England High School is a great place to be.
Our school is underpinned by its Christian values of Caring, Learning and Succeeding. These palpably define the culture of the school and are at the heart of everything we do and of everything we ask of ourselves, of our pupils and parents and of our wider community. Everyone is valued in our school and we focus daily on creating a sense of belonging, of high aspiration and of personal excellence and achievement for every pupil, every member of staff and for every family we serve.
The future at Lowton is exciting! The conditions are perfect for us to continue our journey towards being exceptional in all we do. In applying for this role, you could be part of our exciting journey towards excellence.

Countering Hate, Cultivating Hope is a three-year programme (1 April 2026 – 31 March 2029) responding to rising community tensions and the risk of people being drawn towards divisive narratives and behaviours. Rooted in the legacy of decades of church engagement and aligned with the Church of England’s Vision & Strategy and From Lament to Action.
Delivery follows a hub-and-spoke model: Together Liverpool provides central leadership, coordination, learning and evaluation, while delivery is led locally through partner dioceses (initially Liverpool and Chelmsford in the revised scope), with local staff and partners holding parish relationships and implementing activity.
The programme has two strands:
- Speaking Out: equipping clergy and lay leaders with training, resources and theological reflection to challenge divisive narratives, strengthen inter-faith and civic relationships, and support public voice.
- Working with communities: working in high-deprivation contexts to listen well, support basic needs, and co-design practical pathways into inclusion, opportunity and wellbeing.
Key outputs are a transferable national model, including a digital impact assessment tool, annual impact/funder reporting, a scalable toolkit/resource, and a summative learning conference.

- Reporting: compile partner updates into coherent reports for funders and key stakeholders (narrative, progress, outcomes, risks, and learning), and maintain an evidence trail to support claims.
- Project support and issue resolution: identify delivery blockers early (capacity gaps, unclear processes, delays, data issues, stakeholder friction) and coordinate practical fixes—clarifying responsibilities, improving systems, brokering support, and escalating where necessary.
